About this Piece

This painting was originally inspired by a sketch I did of Abraham Lincoln. My family has always greatly admired President Lincoln and his Gettysburg Address. As I was first learning to paint, a vision of this painting kept coming to me. I painted in sepia tones to capture the feeling of the old photographs of the period, as well as to simplify the task of color mixing. The title of the painting comes from the text of the Gettysburg Address, referring to the sacrifice of the men who fought and died there. Lincoln himself ultimately gave the “last full measure of devotion” for the country he loved.

Shortly after completing the painting I read of President George W. Bush’s admiration for Lincoln, and I was inspired to offer the painting to him in gratitude for his courage and conviction in fighting the evils of abortion and islamic terrorism, not unlike Lincoln’s fight against the evil of slavery. The painting was delivered to him in August of his final year in office, and may one day end up in his presidential library.
